FroCo™ stands for Frozen Cottage Cheese — a brand new category invented by Smearcase in 2023. Just as "froyo" means frozen yogurt, FroCo means frozen cottage cheese. It's an entirely new kind of frozen dessert that didn't exist before Smearcase created it.

FroCo is made with cottage cheese as its primary ingredient — giving it a naturally high protein content, a creamy texture, and a clean simple ingredient list. Unlike traditional protein ice creams that add protein powder, FroCo's protein comes directly from the cottage cheese base.

The name Smearcase honors the ingredient. Derived from the German word Schmierkäse, "smearcase" was what 19th-century Americans called cottage cheese — milkmen sold it door to door. We brought the name back. The FroCo™ trademark is owned by Smearcase Company.

Smearcase was founded in 2023 by Joe Rotondo in New York City. The idea came during marathon training — Joe spent hours in the freezer aisle looking for protein-rich ice cream with clean ingredients, and kept coming up empty. He went home, ate a bowl of cottage cheese, and had the thought: why hasn't anyone made ice cream out of this?

After several failed kitchen experiments with his sister Gianna, the first FroCo recipe was born. Joe partnered with Drew DiSpirito as Co-Founder, and Smearcase launched commercially in July 2024.
